The Middle Ages, the medieval period of European history

between the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Renaissance,

are sometimes referred to as the "Dark Ages."

In order of success:

Byzantium (c. 330-1453) - Turkey, Palestine and parts of Egypt

Mongol Empire (1206–1368) - Central China

Republic of Venice (697–1797) -  Italy, Adriatic coast, Crete and Cyprus, commercial posts Western Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Tang dynasty (618–907) - Eastern China

Ottoman Empire (1299–1923) -southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa

Carolingian Dynasty (800–888) - much of the western half of Europe

Umayyad Caliphate (661–750) - from Pakistan through to Spain including the north region of Africa

Khmer Empire (802-1431)  - Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and southern Vietnam

First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018) - much of southeastern Europe

Jagiellonian dynasty (1386-1572) - Baltic Sea to the Black Sea

Crown of Aragon (1137–1716) - Balearic Islands, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Malta, Southern Italy, and parts of Greece

Mamluk Sultanate (1250-1517) - parts of Egypt through to Syria and the Saudi peninsula

Angevin Empire (1154–1214) - England and half of France

Mali Empire (c. 1235–c. 1600) - central west Africa centered around Timbuktu

Holy Roman Empire (962–1806) - northern Italy to Austria, Germany, the Low Countries and the present-day Czech Republic

Kalmar Union (1397–1523) - Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the latter of which also made her the sovereign over Iceland and Greenland

Fatimid Caliphate (909–1171) - Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt

Timurid Empire (1370–1507) - Central Asia, Iran, Iraq and the Caucasus
